What Happens if my License Expires?

Since license renewal only happens once every two years, it can be easy to miss the renewal date and find yourself with an expired license. Although this is never a good thing, it is easy to solve. Here is what you should know if your license expires:

If your license has been expired for less than or up to 90 days:

  • Your renewal fee will be one-and-a-half times the usual rate

If your license has been expired for 90 days to three years:

  • Your renewal fee will be two times the usual rate.

Additionally, if your license has been expired between 18 months and three years, you are required to submit a Request to Executive Director for Expired License Renewal. This is in addition to the double renewal fee.

Licenses that are expired for more than three years are no longer eligible for renewal. Instead, you will be required to re-apply for a cosmetology license in Texas.

Of course, the easiest thing to do is to stay on top of your license and renew at the appropriate time. Our Cosmetology Continuing Education Course Online makes it easy for Texas cosmetology professionals to complete the four hours of continuing education needed for license renewal.

Are There Any Special Requirements to Consider?

In general, the above rules apply to all individuals seeking cosmetology license renewal in Texas. However, if you have held your cosmetology license for at least 15 years and are at least 65 years old, your continuing education must contain one hour of sanitation education.

The first module of the Texas Cosmetology Continuing Education Course is sanitation, so you can trust that your course is already TDLR-approved and you are good to go.

Please note: You will not receive additional continuing education hours for completing the same course multiple times. It is also advised that you keep a copy of your completion certificate in a safe location. Should the Texas Department of Licensing and Registration conduct an inspection of your license, records of continuing education completion may be requested.
