Who is required to complete a food handler program?

A food handler is a food service employee who works with unpackaged food, food equipment or utensils, or food contact surfaces, such as hostesses, bar-backs, kitchen staff, bussers, etc. As of September 1st, 2016 all those listed above must become certified food handlers.

Does the company need to pay for the food handler training?

A company must not pay for food handler training unless the employee who needs it works for below minimum wage.

However, it is the responsibility of the person in charge or the Certified Food Manager to ensure that all employees are properly trained in food safety as it relates to their assigned duties.

When do new employees need to be certified by?

New employees must be certified within 60 days of being hired.

Why do I need food handler training?

Education of the food handlers provides more qualified employees, thereby reducing the risk of foodborne illness outbreaks caused by improper food preparation and handling techniques.

Is this training completely online?

No! There is no final exam. Once you have completed the 2 hours of course materials, you are able to instantly download your certificate of completion and food handler card.

What kind of card do I get?

Food Handler Cards issued by an accredited program shall be recognized statewide by regulatory authorities as the valid proof of successful completion of a department accredited food handler education or training program.

How long is the certificate/card valid?

Your Texas Online Food Handler Program certification is valid for 2 years from the date of course completion. You need to complete the course every 2 years to maintain your certification.

I lost my certificate. How do I get a new one?

You can login to your account at any time after completing the course and reprint your certificate and card. You can always contact customer service or use the "Forgot Your Password?" option on the login screen if you cannot remember your login information.

Is this course approved by the city of Austin?

As of July 2015, the Austin city does not require additional registration with the city after completing the course. However, food handler courses must be approved by the state or ANSI. Our course is state-approved and satisfies this requirement. If you have any questions about the requirements of your local municipalities, please contact your nearest Department of Health and Human Services.
